Friday April 19th Well, we've been home (whatever that word means these days) for a week now. Our sleep schedules are all pretty much back to normal. The kids are caught up on make up work for school. The bags are all unpacked, well at least the ones that I plan on unpacking! and we're on to the next phase. The plane ride back was okay. It wasn't as good as the flight there for several reasons. First of all we had to leave Doug in the Netherlands. The second reason was because we had a daytime flight back so the kids didn't sleep for the majority of the flight like before. We got some good news while we were there. Doug's official orders came through for the job that we will be going to in August after we leave Europe. For those of you who are un-initiated in the Navy way of life this does not mean our orders can't change and send us someplace else, but I feel a little more confident about telling people where we're going now that we have something in writing that is tangible (papers). So here's a hint about where it is. When we leave The Netherlands in August we will travel through 11 time zones to get to where we're going. That means if it's Noon according to our time in Holland it will be 11pm in.........Hawaii! Doug has orders to go to the TRE (Tactical Readiness Exam) team in Pearl Harbor Hawaii. The job will mean that Doug will go to sea for short periods of time. Short is relative of course. My one and only demand for Doug's next shore duty is that it will have to actually take place "On Shore!". We're all looking forward to a couple of days when Doug might possibly be home by 5pm, and lots of trips to the beach in the beautiful Hawaiian sunshine. We'll let you know more details as we find them out. Our more immediate plans involve the kids finishing school and then we'll fly back over to Holland to meet Doug and do some traveling. So far our plans include trips to Southern Germany (Garmish & Munich), Austria (Innsbruk & Salzburg), Switzerland (Zurich & Bern), Luxembourg, and Northern Italy (Milan & Venice). We'll also make a stop in Strassburg France which is where my Mother's Father's family immigrated from when they came to America. *Uncle Pat or anyone else who might have helpful information please get in touch!* Anyone who might have tips or suggestions about our European adventures please email me! Also I would love to hear from any of our Navy friends who have lived in Hawaii who have some scoop that could help us out. Well thats about all there is from now! Keep in touch! |
Tuesday July 9th Okay so it's been quite a while since I last did an update. I have no excuses and a lot to say so I'll just jump right in. Our time here in DC is coming to a close. the first round of movers came yesterday and the last will be here tomorrow. Thursday we take the car up to Baltimore where it will begin the long journey via ship to Hawaii. Friday we board the plane and head back to Amsterdam. We'll be spending 2 1/2 weeks in Europe before we begin our incredibly long journey to Honolulu. We'll leave at 7am make connections in Atlanta and LA and arrive in Hawaii at about 12 midnight. For those of you doing the math that means 15 hours + 11 time zone changes which equals 26 hours of actual travel. Please pray for all of us! We do not have an address in Hawaii yet. We'll be living out of a hotel for a few weeks while we wait to find a house and for our furniture to catch up with us. Our reckamp.com email addresses will be the best way to keep in touch for the rest of the summer. We'll let you know when we have a snail mail address. I have saved the biggest and best news for last. We're going to have a new (cont...) |
